Visceral Contingencies: Exploring Free Improvisation
In this workshop we will explore strategies for performing and listening to improvised experimental music. These tools and techniques will include pedagogical exercises that promote musical interplay and dialogue, the use of prompts and parameters to generate unexpected circumstances and outcomes, and methods for expanding the sonic tapestry using prepared instruments, extended techniques, and electronics. We will underscore foundational tenets such as cultivating deep and active listening as a way to evanesce boundaries between sound, noise, and music, and investigate framing, context, duration, texture, and timbre as organizational principals in abstract music. The session will culminate in a group improvisation using some of the material in this toolkit, and those who wish to participate are encouraged to bring an instrument or use their voice. No prior musical experience is required, and there will be a limited number of musical implements on hand to use.
